Broward Health Medical Center’s cancer program recently earned a three-year national accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. This significant accomplishment demonstrates the hospital’s success at providing optimal care for its cancer patients.
“This accreditation reflects the tremendous dedication of our multidisciplinary cancer center team, which strives to provide world-class care to our South Florida community,” said Heather Havericak, CEO of Broward Health Medical Center. “We are committed to providing transformative care to patients undergoing cancer treatment.”
Broward Health’s flagship hospital was evaluated through a survey process and successfully met 34 CoC quality standards of care, proving the hospital maintains high levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.
“We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a leader in cancer treatment and quality,” said Ryan H. Sobel, MD, medical director of oncology for Broward Health. “This accreditation is a testament to the high-level, compassionate care and support we provide to our cancer patients and their loved ones every day.”
Broward Health Medical Center takes a multidisciplinary team-based approach to treating cancer, including close collaboration among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership for each cancer site results in improved patient care and outcomes.
The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 1,500 CoC-accredited facilities and cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico diagnose and/or treat more than 70% of all newly diagnosed patients with cancer. When cancer patients choose to seek care locally at a CoC-accredited cancer center, they are gaining access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care close to home. The CoC provides the public with information on the resources, services, and cancer treatment experience for each CoC-accredited cancer program through the CoC Hospital Locator at https://www.facs.org/search/cancer-programs.
