Cleveland Clinic Florida just announced that Juan Pablo Umaña, MD, has joined the organization as Chairman of the Division of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery. He is based at Cleveland Clinic’s Weston Hospital. Dr. Umaña is also an Associate Staff Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus in Cleveland, OH.
Upon earning his medical degree at the University of El Rosario in Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Umaña completed the general surgery residency program at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He continued his advanced training at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, CA, where he completed the cardiothoracic surgery residency. With a passion for research, Dr. Umaña completed two fellowships: one in liver transplantation research in Birmingham, England, and the other in mitral valve repair research at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Umaña was the Director of Cardiovascular Surgery, Fundacion Cardioinfantil (Children’s Heart Foundation), in Bogota, Colombia. He developed the largest aortic valve repair program in Latin America and established the Latin-American Cardiovascular Surgery Conference in association with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery.
An active researcher and lecturer, Dr. Umaña completed Cleveland Clinic’s Global Executive Education Program and has spoken at numerous medical conferences, academic meetings and seminars around the world. He is recognized as an expert in mitral and aortic valve repair and was co-inventor of the MitraClip™ as well as other minimally invasive techniques.
